An essay for transfer students is also required. Filling out the Common Application itself is free, but students may have to pay to submit the application to schools. As of January 2017, over 250 schools using the Common App had no application fee, but some colleges and universities do require submission fees as part of the application process. All your schools accept the Coalition App and some of them do not use the Common App. If all your schools accept the Coalition App but not all of them use the Common App (e.g., Virginia Tech), then the more practical option is to apply through the Coalition App. All your schools use the Coalition App and you prefer the Coalition App's interface.

The Common Application (informally known as the Common App) is an undergraduate college admission application that applicants may use to apply to any of more than 800 member colleges and universities in 49 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in Canada, China, Japan, and many European countries. Member colleges and universities that accept the Common App are made up of over 100. Canadian schools that issue transcripts in French are considered foreign and must be reported like any other foreign school.
